News from the Lab

October 2023 – Abrar was awarded a scholarship to attend the 15th annual course Isotope Tracers in Metabolic Research, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. 


October 2023 – Alexandria passed her BMMB qualifying exam! 


December 2023 – Kareem passed his PhD Comprehensive exam! 


July 2023 – Dr. McReynolds and her team (including Dr. Debarshi Roy from Alcorn State University and Brenita Jenkins) secured seed funding from the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences under the Inter-Institutional Partnerships for Diversifying Research (IPDR) Program, specifically in the Life Sciences track (IDLIFE). This initiative, titled "Deciphering Differential Regulation of Metabolic Pathways in Chemo-Sensitive and -Resistant Ovarian Cancer Cells using Repurposed Therapeutic Agents and Natural Products," stands as a collaborative effort between Alcorn State University and Penn State University. 


June 2023 – Dr. McReynolds was an invited speaker to the Endocrine Conference in Chicago, IL where she spoke on managing burnout and promoting resiliency in science. 


June 2023 – Dr. McReynolds was selected to participate in ASBMB’s IMAGE Grant Writing Workshop in Washington DC. 


June 2023 – Isaiah spent this summer as an intern in Yale University's REU Program, where he was mentored by Dr. Valentina Greco.


May 2023 – Abrar successfully passed her Comprehensive Exam, becoming the first graduate student in the lab to achieve this significant accomplishment!


May 2023 – JJ was awarded the prestigious Erickson Discovery Grant for the Summer of 2023 to investigate NAD+ metabolism in mouse models of acute kidney injury. 


May 2023 – Shaina was awarded the Student Engagement Network (SEN) grant for the Summer of 2023 to help support her summer research in the lab.

November 2022 – Kareem is accepted and given the opportunity to travel and attend the 14th Annual Isotope Tracers in Metabolic Research course at Vanderbilt University


October 2022 – Kareem passed his BMMB qualifying exam! Kareem is now the 2nd PhD Candidate in from the McReynolds lab!


October 2022 – Dr. McReynolds was invited to join the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Member Committee for a three-year term. 


September 2022 – Academic Keynote Address, UIC Postdoc Career Development Symposium, University of Illinois Chicago; “Mechanisms of NAD+ Homeostasis in Aging Health and Disease” (Dr. McReynolds)


August 2022 – The McReynolds Lab had 4 new undergraduates to join our team! This includes Shaina, Cole, Clara, and Isabella. 


July 5, 2022 – Abrar received and accepted a position to participate in the NIH/NIGMS-sponsored Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training (T32) program entitled “Research Training in Physiological Adaptations to Stress”


June 6, 2022 – Shanilah and Tatyana were accepted into the Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) in May, before  joining the McReynolds Lab as Penn State Bridge Scholars. 


May 23, 2022 – JJ joins the lab as the first BMMB undergraduate student!


May 16, 2022 – Abrar was the 1st graduate student in the McReynolds Lab to pass her qualifying exam! Congratulations, Abrar—our 1st PhD Candidate in the lab!


May 9, 2022 – Ian joins the lab as the first BMMB undergraduate student!


January 1, 2022 – Melanie officially joins Penn State as an Assistant Professor of BMB!
